Energy Independence

I believe like most Americans, that energy independence means freedom from the political and economic insecurity that comes with being dependent on oil/energy imported from hostile governments. This is why I support an “all of the above” approach to energy independence that encourages the responsible production of nuclear power, clean coal, solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, as well as drilling for oil and natural gas, all in an environmentally responsible way.

I believe our Nation has the knowledge, power, and resources in order to become energy independent from all foreign Nations. We should develop a “National Energy Plan” with its sole goal of remaining energy independent of all nations. I equate this to our National security. We need to be united in our efforts to achieve this goal and I believe we can once again become united in securing our energy independence.

To reach our goal of 100% energy independence, we will have to embrace all forms of energy: carbon-based fuels, solar, wind water and even nuclear. We will have to deploy them responsibly so that we can have abundant energy for centuries to come without adversely affecting our natural environment. I am a firm believer that we can accomplish this with the great scientific minds and the innovativeness and entrepreneurship of our private companies.

Whether it is hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for natural gas or large solar arrays in the desert where people want to protect land, our local environmental desires run up against the developments that can benefit us nationally. We need an intelligent and informed conversation about that which we can have that is also based on facts and not just someone’s emotions. I believe we can accomplish both by working side-by-side to protect our environment while achieving our energy independence.

For those that believe renewable energy is the only way, I say that someday that will be true but not at this time or even in the near future. As the renewables become more practicable and cost effective for the average citizen, the more we should move towards it. Until that time, we will have to continue using fossil and other fuels.
